Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminum. The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. I was having a clear up and discovered a treasure trove of tubes of acrylic paint that I had long forsaken for oil paints. I used them to paint my impression of Cribarth (The Sleeping Giant) which we can see from our garden.
